Perfect for fans of Robert Harris’s Munich and The Fatherland Stag Maguire, a burnt-out journalist hardly able to prop himself up in the wake of tragedy, agrees to help a friend move. They find an urgent message - HELP ME - written on a piece of silk tacked behind a long-forgotten portrait. The message from an address in Berlin is urgent, though it had to have been written pre-World War II. Curious, Stag and his friend begin to research the address and whomever might have written the message. They trace the address to an apartment, a sealed time capsule that has not been lived in since 1942. And from one phone call to that apartment, the men unleash a nefarious plot and brutal security forces long thought vanquished. Events begin to cascade without mercy, and Stag - a broken man from the Midwest - finds himself pitted against a vestige of the Third Reich with powerful forces ensuring the propagation of Heydrich’s infamous SD - the Nazis' intelligence agency - in today’s world. Will ordinary man Stag Maguire prevail in his lone stand against evil? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ian Hawkins. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/185545/bk_acx0_185545_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

The Time of Sacrifice

Having just escaped from the events at Kirkstall Abbey near Leeds in 1779, William and the mortally wounded Larissa have been taken from their intended destination and land on the planet Melhandur; a world trapped in the medieval era where technology cannot function. Immediately upon their arrival their time capsule is rendered inoperable. They find out that the people in the various settlements, descendants of groups of humans who have been abducted by aliens in Earth's distant past, are periodically being gathered by an alliance of powerful warlocks and druids to be offered as sacrifices to aliens who come to collect them for an unknown purpose. With the help of the Immortal, it doesn't take them long to realise that Melhandur is a world that the aliens use to breed human beings like livestock. At the castle estate of Belhamburh they learn that a Temporal Security agent who'd gone missing years earlier had in fact ended up on Melhandur after passing through a space-time portal, which occurred over eighty years ago according to Melhandur's history. The agent had then disappeared again while investigating a centuries-old legend of two wizards who'd been working on a way to protect the people from being taken by the aliens. But the possibility of a space-time portal offers hope that William and Larissa might be able to get back to Earth to be reunited with Luke and Cerah, who were left trapped in 1779. And as they find out more about the origins of the stones that give the warlocks and druids their great power, it becomes clear that they have far reaching implications that go beyond Melhandur. But the time for the next collection of sacrifices is at hand. The warlocks and druids are planning to attack the local settlements to capture victims for sacrifice, with assistance from the formidable Nordics; warriors decended from Vikings who'd been taken from Earth generations ago. Receiving no help from King Walric, it is left to William, Larissa, the Immortal, and the people of Belhamburh and its neighbouring settlements, to make what alliances they can in preparation for the aliens' arrival, but even within alliances they find treachery and betrayal.

After Khomeini

For many Americans, Iran is our most dangerous enemy--part of George W. Bush's 'axis of evil' even before the appearance of Ahmadinejad. But what is the reality? How did Ahmadinejad rise to power, and how much power does he really have? What are the chances of normalizing relations with Iran? In After Khomeini, Saïd Amir Arjomand paints a subtle and perceptive portrait of contemporary Iran. This work, a sequel to Arjomand's acclaimed The Turban for the Crown, examines Iran under the successors of Ayatollah Khomeini up to the present day. He begins, as the Islamic Republic did, with Khomeini, offering a brilliant capsule biography of the man who masterminded the revolution that overthrew the Shah. Arjomand draws clear distinctions between the moderates of the initial phrase of the revolution, radicals, pragmatists, and hardliners, the latter best exemplified by Mahmud Ahmadinejad. Taking a chronological and thematic approach, he traces the emergence and consolidation of the present system of collective rule by clerical councils and the peaceful transition to dual leadership by the ayatollah as the supreme guide and the subordinate president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He explains the internal political quarrels among Khomeini's heirs as a struggle over his revolutionary legacy. And he outlines how the ruling clerical elite and the nation's security forces are interdependent politically and economically, speculating on the potential future role of the Revolutionary Guards. Bringing the work up to current political events, Arjomand analyzes Iran's foreign policy as well, including the impact of the fall of Communism on Iran and Ahmadinejad's nuclear policy. Few countries loom larger in American foreign relations than Iran. In this rich and insightful account, an expert on Iranian society and politics untangles the complexities of a nation still riding the turbulent wake of one of history's great revolutions.
